Ljubljana Airport: Strong Growth in 2025 and positive Outlook for the Summer 2026

Ljubljana Airport recorded excellent results in the past year, successfully continuing its upward traffic trend. Nearly 1.6 million passengers were served, representing a 10.6% increase compared to 2024. A dynamic summer season is also expected, bringing even more opportunities for both business and leisure travel. Current airline forecasts for the 2026 summer season are aswell very promising, bringing a broader range of flights, destinations and capacities. 

Passenger traffic at Ljubljana Airport has shown strong growth and is recovering as expected. 2025 closed with 1,591,443 passengers, marking a 10.6% year-on-year increase. The final month of the year, when 101,803 passengers travelled through the airport, also recorded the highest growth compared to 2024, with passenger numbers in December rising by as much as 18.7%. The busiest months of the year were July and August, when monthly passenger numbers exceeded 180,000.

“An exceptionally successful year in 2025, during which we served nearly 1.6 million passengers, is the result of long-term and systematic efforts to expand our destination network and continuously improve the passenger experience. Numerous capacity increases already announced for 2026 confirm that Ljubljana Airport is becoming an increasingly competitive, attractive and reliable gateway for air travel, successfully connecting Slovenia with the world and opening the door to new opportunities,” emphasised Dr Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenia.

Among scheduled flights, passengers most frequently chose popular destinations such as Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich, Amsterdam and London. Charter flights, which remain an important part of the leisure travel offering, were most popular to Hurghada, Antalya, Tunisia, Sharm El Sheikh and the Greek island of Rhodes.

Positive Outlook for the 2026 Summer Season

Current airline forecasts for the 2026 summer season are very promising, bringing a broader range of flights, destinations and capacities. As early as this month, Pegasus Airlines will launch a new connection to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, while in April Ljubljana Airport will welcome a new easyJet route to Edinburgh. In June, Wizz Air will add a new connection to Podgorica alongside its existing flights to Skopje.

A significant expansion of services has also been announced by Spanish carrier Iberia, which will substantially extend its seasonal connection between Madrid and Ljubljana this year. Flights will begin in early June and operate twice weekly until the end of September. Low-cost carrier Vueling will likewise continue its Barcelona service during the summer schedule.

According to forecasts, several other airlines are also expected to strengthen their presence at Ljubljana Airport in 2026. Notably, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which has been connecting Ljubljana and Amsterdam daily since March 2025, and Swiss International Air Lines (Zurich) will both enhance their services in the summer schedule with morning departures and evening returns, improving connectivity for passengers starting their journeys at Ljubljana Airport.

airBaltic will introduce an additional weekly frequency on the Riga route, while increased frequencies have also been announced by Aegean Airlines (Athens), flydubai (Dubai), British Airways (London Heathrow) and Wizz Air (Skopje). In addition, Lufthansa will increase aircraft capacity on flights to Frankfurt and Munich.

With all these announced developments, Fraport Slovenia expects to record continued stable passenger growth in 2026 and further strengthen Ljubljana Airport’s role in the region.
