19 May officially declared as Lipizzaner Day in Slovenia

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has officially declared 19 May as Lipizzaner Day, recognising the exceptional historical, cultural and symbolic value of the Lipizzaner for Slovenia. The chosen date holds particular significance, as it was on 19 May 1580 that the founding document of the Lipica Stud Farm was signed – marking the beginning of one of the country’s most enduring and internationally recognised heritage institutions.

The Lipizzaner is among the most important symbols of Slovenia’s cultural heritage and national identity, with a strong presence far beyond the country’s borders. Its international importance is underscored by the uninterrupted operation of the Lipica Stud Farm for more than four centuries, as well as by the inscription of the tradition of Lipizzaner breeding on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022.

Minister Mateja Čalušić emphasised the broader meaning of the decision: "By proclaiming Lipizzaner Day, we wish to highlight the Lipizzaner’s role in our history, culture and tourism, and to reaffirm our commitment to preserving this precious tradition for future generations. For Slovenians, the Lipizzaner is a lasting symbol of pride, connection and respect for both natural and cultural heritage. May 19 May become a day when we reflect on our roots, celebrate our identity and look confidently to the future, in which the Lipizzaner will continue to serve as an ambassador of Slovenia at home and around the world."

The declaration of Lipizzaner Day further strengthens the recognition of the Lipizzaner as a living cultural legacy and an important ambassador of Slovenia’s heritage, values and sustainable traditions.
