In Brežice, Love Takes a Centre Stage with "The Path of Love"

Brežice invites visitors to follow The Path of Love, where heritage, architecture, and storytelling come together in a journey that proves love truly can be found at every step. In this way love takes the centre stage, connecting ten of the main attractions in Brežice.

Brežice is a lively crossroads of rich cultural heritage and water-inspired experiences, strategically situated at the confluence of the Sava and Krka rivers. The town’s skyline is defined by two striking landmarks – the imposing Brežice Castle, home to the magnificent Knight’s Hall and the iconic Water Tower, a symbol of the town’s industrial past and a popular urban viewpoint. With its proximity to Terme Čatež, rolling vineyard hills and scenic themed trails, Brežice offers a unique blend of history, spa tourism and active leisure in the heart of the Posavje region.

But in Brežice, love takes centre stage – connecting ten of the town’s main attractions through a special guided route called The Path of Love (Pot ljubezni). This thematic walk intertwines real and legendary love stories that have shaped the town’s character over time. The route invites visitors to explore Brežice’s landmarks, each revealing its own romantic tale – from historic legends and architectural details to timeless symbols of affection and devotion.

Brežice Water Tower

Standing tall and proud since 1914, the Water Tower has long been a beacon welcoming visitors to Brežice. Originally built to supply water to the town, it remains the only fully accessible water tower in Slovenia. Across its seven floors, visitors can explore stories of technical innovation, love and the connection between nature and culture. The tower is open to all – visitors can reach the top either by stairs or elevator – and from its viewing platform, once the original water reservoir, enjoy a stunning 360-degree panorama of Brežice and the surrounding riverscape.

The Love Legend of the Eight Hearts

At the top of the tower, on the outer edge of the former water reservoir, lies a unique architectural detail – eight wooden hearts. These hearts have inspired a local legend that continues to stir the imagination. It tells of a high-ranking Austro-Hungarian official who, during his posting in Brežice, fell deeply in love with a local woman. Unable to confess his feelings, he immortalised his love by having the hearts built into the wooden structure of the tower – forever binding his affection to the city’s skyline.
