140 Years of Tourism in Portorož

This year, Portorož proudly marks a remarkable milestone – 140 years of tourism. More than just an anniversary, it is a story of vision, perseverance and transformation, from a modest health resort with ten rooms, Portorož has grown into one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Slovenia and along the Adriatic coast.

The roots of tourism here reach back to 1885, when Piran physician Giovanni Lugnani transformed part of a local chemical factory into an experimental thermal facility. With ten guest rooms and ten therapeutic pools, this small centre laid the foundation for Portorož’s reputation as a destination for wellness and higher-quality leisure. By 1897, Portorož was officially recognised as a health resort, sparking intensive development and setting the stage for its future growth.

Celebrating History on World Tourism Day

On World Tourism Day, the Portorož Tourist Association honoured the rich history of the town and the many individuals whose dedication has shaped its tourism identity for more than a century.

The highlight of the anniversary celebrations was the event Postcard from Portorož: 140 Years of Tourism in Portorož, held on Saturday, 27 September at Trg prekomorskih brigad. This tribute to the past and celebration of the present spotlighted the historical role of postcards in promoting Portorož. Visitors will even be able to send a commemorative postcard from the very place that has been welcoming guests from around the world for over 100 years.

Conference on Regenerative Tourism at Turistica

On Friday, 26 September at noon, the Faculty of Tourism Studies – Turistica hosted the conference Tourism That Gives Back to People and Destinations. Bringing together experts from Greece, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, the event explored how tourism can move beyond conventional sustainability to become regenerative – giving back more to communities and nature than it takes.

The conference reflects this year’s UNWTO theme, which emphasises inclusiveness and responsibility for the planet, while also following the EU's guidelines for the development of regenerative tourism.
