Churches in Slovenia give a distinctive appearance to many towns and villages. Ancient monasteries and charterhouses are a rich source of history and cultural heritage. Pilgrimage sites provide inspiration and spiritual growth.

There is hardly a village or hill in Slovenia without a church, an important part of the Slovenian cultural landscape. At almost every turn, you will come across a chapel or a wayside shrine. Behind the monastery walls lie numerous fascinating stories, many of which have today been transformed into experiences. Did you know that pilgrims were among the first visitors to Slovenian soil? Even today, popular pilgrimage sites and routes attract visitors to the area.

There are more than 6,000 sacred structures in Slovenia, including more than 2,900 churches. All this ranks Slovenia among the countries with the densest networks of sacred buildings. However, these buildings are not only religious in nature, but are also rich treasure troves of history, art and cultural heritage.
