August Festivals and Heritage Events in Ptuj

Whether you are wandering through centuries‑old streets, stepping into Roman sandals, uncovering ancient cults or toasting poetry with a glass of fine wine, Ptuj offers the days of discovery, where history and culture are alive at every turn. From 18 to 23 August, the acclaimed Days of Poetry and Wine bring together leading poets from around the world and some of Slovenia’s finest winemakers. Just days later, from 22 to 24 August, Ptuj transforms into Roman Poetovio for the Roman Games, one of the largest re‑enactments of the Roman era in this part of Europe. Summer in Ptuj is also marked by other outstanding festivals.

Slovenia’s oldest town, Ptuj, enchants visitors with its rich history and atmospheric medieval streets, crowned by the mighty Ptuj Castle. The castle houses outstanding permanent collections, from arms and armour to exquisite tapestries and a remarkable selection of musical instruments from around the world.

Until 15 September, the castle also hosts the special exhibition Fashion Through Time, where local costume designer Mateja Benedetti presents a captivating journey through historical dress.

A Journey into the Past

The town reveals some of its most intriguing chapters through unique heritage experiences. Once one of Europe’s key centres of Mithraism, Ptuj offers guided tours among its ancient Mithraeums every Tuesday until the end of summer. The First and Third Mithraeums remain preserved in situ, an exceptional rarity in the European context.

Another gem is the Ptuj City Tower, formerly the bell tower of St George’s Church, where an interactive exhibition and a unique mechanical clock await visitors. From its top, breathtaking views open over Ptuj’s red‑roofed core and the surrounding countryside.

Poetry, Wine and Roman Legends

In summer, Ptuj’s narrow streets fill with music, poetry and history. From 18 to 23 August, the acclaimed Days of Poetry and Wine bring together leading poets from around the world and some of Slovenia’s finest winemakers. Evening poetry readings, intimate courtyard performances, literary walks, wine tastings, art exhibitions and film screenings create an atmosphere that blends culture and pleasure. This year, the festival shines a spotlight on Croatian poetry, while also featuring other international and Slovenian authors, with special guests Gioconda Belli from Nicaragua and Nikola Madžirov from North Macedonia.

Just days later, from 22 to 24 August, Ptuj transforms into Roman Poetovio for the Roman Games, one of the largest re‑enactments of the Roman era in this part of Europe. More than 800 participants revive scenes from ancient life – from gladiator combats and legionary drills to senatorial gatherings and religious rites. The event recalls Ptuj’s strategic role in the Roman Empire, vividly described by the historian Tacitus, and offers an immersive step into the past.

Summer Stages and Creative Energy

Summer in Ptuj is also marked by other outstanding festivals. The international contemporary art festival Art Stays brings thought‑provoking exhibitions, some displayed in the inspiring setting of Ptuj Castle. The Arsana Festival  fills the town with world‑class music, performed in its most atmospheric venues.
