Slovenia Enters the Race to Host the "Grand Départ" of the "Tour de France" in 2029

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has adopted a decision on a letter of intent to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Slovenia.

With this official step, it has expressed a clear and ambitious commitment for Slovenia to become the host of one of the world’s biggest and most-watched sporting events. The initiative was presented at a press conference by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Robert Golob.

Also present at today’s press conference were Pavel Marđonović, President of the Slovenian Cycling Federation and Bogdan Fink, Director of the Tour of Slovenia. Leading Slovenian cyclists expressed their support for the initiative through video messages.

The Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Slovenia would not only be a remarkable sporting event, but also a historic moment for our country. Slovenia has it all: breathtaking landscapes, spectacular climbs, vibrant cities, rich cultural heritage, world-class infrastructure and extensive experience in hosting major international competitions. With a strong commitment to sustainability and a proven capacity to connect sport with the economy, tourism and society, Slovenia stands as an ideal host for this global event.

The Tour de France is broadcast in more than 190 countries each year, with up to 12 million spectators watching the race live along the route. Slovenia views this not only as a chance to host a world-class sporting event, but as an opportunity to share its story with the world – as a dedicated partner in a global movement that unites sport, culture, nature and community. With strong national commitment, deep-rooted pride and a clear vision, Slovenia is ready to enter this new chapter alongside the Tour de France and contribute to the ongoing history of global cycling.

Thanks to the achievements of Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Matej Mohorič and many other top cyclists, Slovenia has become a global cycling powerhouse. But these achievements are more than just victories – they have sparked a wave of enthusiasm, a mass movement in recreational cycling and a new generation of youth who see their future in sport.

Slovenia’s story of movement began over 5,200 years ago with the creation of the world’s oldest wooden wheel with an axle – unearthed in the Ljubljana Marshes. Today, that same spirit fuels a vibrant cycling culture and a growing reputation as a top destination for active living. Here, cycling goes beyond competition; it speaks to the country’s enduring values: unity, energy and progress.
