European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica–Gorizia Highlights in July

July brings a lineup of ECoC events rich with editorial potential – from boundary-pushing performances to exciting social commentary and open-air cinema.

Two of July’s key highlights are already generating buzz. Borderless Body, a new dance production by the acclaimed MN Dance Company (3, 5, and 6 July), explores identity and transformation through movement and narrative. Tickets are now on sale, and early audience reactions suggest a performance destined to resonate far beyond the region. Just weeks later, international piano sensation Alexander Gadjiev – a native of the cross-border area – returns for Meeting Point (17 and 20 July), a concert bridging cultures through musical virtuosity.

Beyond the headliners, there’s a wide spectrum of stories to follow. Until 6 July, the Prečkanja – Sconfinamenti festival presents a series of classical music concerts that reflect the broader theme of cultural crossings. Meanwhile, the Contemporary Clown and New Circus Festival launched last weekend.

Beginning 1 July, Non-Permanent Residence provides an emotional look at the refugee experience – an experiential project well-suited for human-interest and migration-related features. On 4 and 5 July, experimental music fans will find a rare double performance of Fausto Romitelli’s work, taking place in both Gorizia and Ljubljana, offering an avant-garde exploration of sound, place and perception.

The 44th Sergio Amidei Award begins on 17 July, continuing its legacy of honouring excellence in screenwriting. For those seeking cinematic stories under the stars, the Silvan Furlan Open-Air Cinema begins its summer run on 23 July.

With themes of borders, identity, displacement and creative collaboration at its core, July’s programming in Nova Gorica–Gorizia offers a powerful lens into what it means to be at the crossroads of cultures.
