New Michelin Article on Slovenia: Kodila Restaurant

In this feature article, the Michelin Guide shines a spotlight on Kodila Restaurant, a new entry in the 2024 Michelin Guide and proud recipient of the Bib Gourmand award. Authored by Michelin journalist Sarah Scaparone, the piece is part of an ongoing partnership between the Slovenian Tourist Board and the Michelin Guide.

Set against the expansive plains of Prekmurje lies a true culinary institution – Kodila. For three generations, this establishment has been shaped by a deep respect for its local roots and a dedication to premium-quality ingredients. Renowned for its exceptional meat and cured products, Kodila has earned recognition that stretches well beyond Slovenia’s borders. The visionary behind its modern-day evolution is Janez Kodila, who opened his first butcher shop in the early years of Slovenia’s independence, carrying forward the family legacy.

A thatched-roof building with a traditional design catches the eye amid the lush Slovenian landscape, its charm contrasted by a sleek modern extension. Only once you step inside do you begin to fully appreciate the soul of Kodila. At the heart of the experience is hospitality. On the ground floor, a butcher shop offers premium meats, charcuterie and fine Slovenian products – from cheeses to honey – alongside gourmet offerings served in a cozy dining room tucked next to the shop.

Climb one floor and you’ll find rooms dedicated to meat aging. On the second floor is the restaurant itself, helmed by chef Boštjan Lačen, who has brought his culinary expertise to Kodila for the past eight years. The space exudes the feel of a contemporary bistro, offering a relaxed atmosphere where local tradition meets innovation. The menu showcases a masterful use of top-tier meat cuts, presented with finesse and authenticity.

We invite you to discover the full story and culinary philosophy of Kodila Restaurant.
