Discover the Revitalized Vilenica Website

Spring marks a season of renewal, and the Sežana Caving Association has embraced this spirit with the launch of a refreshed digital presence. The newly renovated website offers an updated, user-friendly experience for visitors exploring the rich history and natural beauty of Vilenica Cave.

Vilenica Cave is not only a natural wonder, but also a cultural landmark whose history of exploration stretches back to the Copper Age, as evidenced by prehistoric ceramics found at its entrance. In 1633, Count Benvenuto Petazzi entrusted the management of the cave to the Lokva parish, making Vilenica the first documented tourist cave in the world

This early recognition was followed by centuries of fascination, attracting a long list of noble and notable visitors. Among them were Emperor Leopold I (1660), King Ferdinand I of Naples and Sicily (1790), Emperor Leopold II (1790, 1791), Emperor Francis I (1816, 1818), and King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony (1836). From 1821, a guestbook recorded more than 2,000 visitors by 1889, their entries written in a medley of languages that reflect Vilenica's international allure.

Since 1963, when the Sežana Caving Association reopened the cave to the public, Vilenica has undergone extensive modernization, making it accessible once again to a growing number of visitors. In recent years, further steps have been taken to connect with contemporary explorers. A dedicated promotional committee was formed, resulting in a refreshed visual identity, including a new logo and slogan now visible across digital and print platforms.

A key milestone in this journey was the launch of online ticketing via the Mojekarte.si platform, followed by the decision to fully redesign the website. With the refreshed website, visitors will step into a new chapter of Vilenica’s story. This summer, they are also expanding their tour schedule, and in August, cave tours will be held daily at 11:00 and 15:00.
