Decanter 2024: Slovenian winemakers shine with a platinum medal and five golds

At the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) in London, Slovenian winemakers have set a new record by bringing home a historic number of awards. This year, Slovenia’s exceptional wines earned one Platinum medal, 5 Gold medals, 99 Silver medals and 118 Bronze medals—the highest number of medals ever achieved by Slovenian wineries at this prestigious event.

The Platinum medal was awarded to Miran Sirk of Bjana, who continues to set new standards in the world of Slovenian sparkling wine. Not only is Sirk the first Slovenian winemaker to secure both a Gold and Platinum medal for Slovenian sparkling wine, but he also holds the record for the most Platinum medals among Slovenian winemakers.

In addition, Klet Brda has again captured the spotlight with two Gold medals, mirroring their success from last year. This year, they impressed judges with their white wines, with the Motnik Single Vineyard Rebula (2017) and Quercus Pinot Gris (2023) each earning a Gold medal and a Value Wine label for wines priced under €15 that offer exceptional quality.

Gregor Mikuž from M-Wines and Gašper Čarman of Gašper Wines also continued their impressive streak from last year. Mikuž’s 2021 Extrem (aged Sauvignon) and Čarman’s 2021 Cabernet Franc both repeated their Gold-winning success from the previous vintage. Adding to the celebration, Kristančič from Medana secured a Gold medal for his red Pavo (2021), showcasing the depth and diversity of Slovenia’s wine excellence.

This year’s Decanter results underline the growing global recognition of Slovenian wines, reflecting both the tradition and innovation driving the country's winemaking industry. With a record total of 223 awards, Slovenia has solidified its reputation as a producer of world-class wines.
