Kurent & Kurentovanje

The Kurent is a mystical demon who chases off winter and welcomes spring every year. Being the most recognisable Shrovetide character in Slovenia, it is no wonder that more than half a century ago the carnival in Ptuj, Kurentovanje, was named after it.

Kurentovanje in Ptuj is the largest organised Shrovetide carnival in Slovenia and, thanks to its long and rich tradition, one of the top unique cultural spectacles in the world. Every year, it attracts not only droves of visitors and groups from all corners of Slovenia, but also international bands of Shrovetide characters visiting from abroad. This year, they expect groups from Italy, France, Slovakia, Germany and Belgium, and plenty of foreign visitors.

In 2017 UNESCO added Kurentovanje to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This year, the festival celebrates its 60th anniversary. Kurentovanje is taking place from 15 to 25 February 2020, with diverse carnival events every day. The main event, the Sunday international carnival parade, will be accompanied by Ex-tempore - international painting event, the intercontinental meeting of traditional Shrovetide characters and masks, the day of Kurent/Korant groups, the night spectacle, the children's parade and several events presenting native Shrovetide characters. The festival will end with the traditional burial of Pust.
