Overview of the 2016 tourist year

In the year 2016 Slovenian tourism marks record numbers. The number of international arrivals continues and with 12.0% more tourist arrivals compared to 2015, Slovenia is above the European average. In 2016  we achieved 4,317,504 tourist arrivals and 11,179,879 overnight stays, which is 9.9% more arrivals and 8.1% more overnight stays than in 2015. A brief overview of tourism in Slovenia in the past year contains basic data on Slovenian tourism, the structure of overnight stays by types of municipalities and types of accommodation facilities, as well as competitiveness index and safety of Slovenian tourism.

Overview of tourism in the 1991–2010 period

In 2010, the Slovenian Tourist Board drafted a special publication that presented 20 years of Slovenian tourism, from independence of Slovenia onwards. Compared to movements at the European level, tourism in Slovenia grew and developed at an above-average rate. The total growth in the number of tourists increased by more than 100%. Today, tourism is the most important sector within the export of services as it accounts for 40%, contributes more than 12% share to the total of Slovenia's GDP, and provides work for 12% of the nation’s employees.
