Easter is a festivity at which the whole family comes together and old customs are revived. In Koroška they are known as pisánke, while in parts of Štajerska and in Prekmurje they are called ramenice or remenke. In Idrija eggs are decorated with wonderful Idrija lace. With more than 15,000 tiny holes, Easter eggs from Vrhnika are a masterpiece as fine as any lace. In Bela Krajina you will find unique pisanke that are one of the symbols of this region along the Kolpa river. These wonderful ornaments, created using melted beeswax and by scratching fine patterns in black and red paint, were once made by girls for their sweethearts as a way of showing their love. Easter eggs are part of many family celebrations. "Chopping" Easter eggs is one of the oldest Easter traditions in Slovenia and varies from region to region. In Dolenjska and Gorenjska, fun contests are organised where the object is to try and "chop" or "beat" the eggs. Players throw coins at eggs placed in a basket at least a metre and a half away, or use a curved stick to aim at an egg set up six metres away. Other variants include rolling eggs down a rake handle or washboard.
Easter preparations can also be great fun. Easter egg decorating workshops are organised in many parts of Slovenia. You can also visit exhibitions of hand-made masterpieces that women and girls put on all over Slovenia at Easter time.
