Slovenian folk dances by the Ljubljanica

The group France Marolt Academic Folklore Group performs traditional dances from all the regions inhabited by Slovenians. Nearly all the dances are performed in traditional costumes worn in the regions of the dances' origin.

Slovenian folk dances by the Ljubljanica

The France Marolt Academic Folklore Group of the University of Ljubljana's Student Organization is one of the leading Slovenian folklore troupes. It has been committed to presenting Slovenian folk dances both at home and internationally since its establishment in 1948.

At 6 p.m. a procession along the Ljubljana streets starts on Prešernov trg Square and moves towards Mesarski most Bridge, where the main dance performance takes place.

This time, the group will present their most iconic choreography, "Dances of the Ljubljana Suburbs", composed by former artistic director Mirko Ramovš during his most productive years. The choreography showcases dances that were performed in the surrounding villages of Ljubljana during the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The choreography is adorned with handmade folk costumes that depict the clothing heritage of that era. Particularly striking are the costumes worn by the girls, made from dark patterned silk in the style of bourgeois fashion. They also wear embroidered white headscarves with lace edges, which were tied in a special "rooster tail" manner, characteristic only of the Ljubljana area and its vicinity.

As the second choreography, the group will present the medley "Prekmurje Dances", often referred to as "Working Prekmurje" by the Marolt Dance Group. The choreography represents some of the most distinctive dances of Prekmurje, traditionally performed after a day of work. Some of these dances have been preserved within the community up to the present day. The arrangement was created by the former artistic director of the group, Mirko Ramovš, who skillfully combined the selected dances into a lively performance. Among them, the "Tkalečka" dance stands out, where boys compete by passing a handkerchief under their feet. The costumes reflect the simple yet characteristic clothing style of Prekmurje until the First World War, later replaced by industrially manufactured clothing.
