Exhibition: The Legend of Zlatorog

See the exhibition The Legend of Zlatorog with illustrations and stills from the award-winning animated film based on a Slovenian folk tale.

Come and see the exhibition The Legend of Zlatorog, which reveals a glimpse into the making of the animated film of the same name by the creative duo Lee Vučko and Damir Grbanović. The exhibition presents selected illustrations, backgrounds, and frames from the film, which is based on the well-known Slovenian fairy tale about Zlatorog—a symbol of pure nature and balance between man and mountain. The film, which has won awards at numerous international festivals, was created under the auspices of their production studio Octopics, which specialises in animated films and visual storytelling.

Through the exhibition, visitors can learn about the creative process that turned more than 10,000 drawings into a 13-minute animated story about the legendary Zlatorog. The exhibition displays a selection of illustrations, more specifically frames from the animated film "The Legend of Zlatorog," the film debut of Lee Vučko and Damir Grbanović. The Legend of Zlatorog is a Slovenian folk tale that has been preserved in Slovenian folklore for many centuries as a result of the fateful interdependence between nature and man. Similar tales are also known in the Albanian mountains, among the South Slavs, in Greece, and in the wider Eastern Alpine region. In 1868, Karel Dežman was the first to publish the tale of Zlatorog in the Ljubljana German daily Laibacher Zeitung. This account inspired the German poet Rudolf Baumbach, who turned it into verse and published it in 1877. Zlatorog is still a well-known and widespread figure today, but his story, which carries a message about nature conservation, is less so. Lea comes from Bohinj, so she has been familiar with the legend of Zlatorog since childhood. She toyed with the idea of depicting the legend while studying illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, and later, when she became acquainted with animation, the idea crystallized.
