Kopanj is one of the most beautiful hums in Slovenia. On the top of the hill stands a church with its vicarage, in which Dr France Prešeren, the famous romantic poet, spent three years. The young Prešeren was sent to his uncle, the vicar at Kopanje, to work as a shepherd-boy. Next to the granary still stands the table by which Prešeren learned to read and write.
The church of Mary's Assumption was built using the remains of a prehistoric settlement. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1433. The baroque church was destroyed during WW2. In 1970 it was fully restored.
From the hilltop there is a wonderful view of the Radensko Polje with its extraordinary natural beauty and the Julian Alps can be seen in the distance. A couple of minutes walk form the church will bring you to a small stream dedicated to Mary, which never runs dry and according to local lore has healing properties.
