The village was first mentioned in 1257 and supposedly gained its name after a daughter pertaining to nobility Marija Volcija, who was cured in the village. However, the remains of an ancient fort “Debela griža” give proof that it has been settled long before. A Roman path also led by. The local stonecutters represented a strong entity in the art of stonecutting for the surrounding area, which can be seen by the finely carved stone details on front doors - kaluna, brackets, pils (a small chapel) etc. In a separated part of the village stands a baroque church of St. John the Baptist. Srečko Colja (politician, condemned at the 2nd Trieste trial/legal proceeding) and Marjan Rožanc (writer, scriptwriter, winner of the Prešernova nagrada award) lived in Volčji Grad. Every year the Rožanc award is delivered for literary achievements.
