Kostanjevica na Krki, Slovenia's smallest town and one of the oldest, is a veritable wonder of nature. The "na Krki" ("on the Krka") part of its name is extremely apt, since the old part of the town is actually situated on an island in a bend of the river Krka, at the foot of the Gorjanci Hills. The town originally developed around a fortress known as Landestrost or Landstrasse, a former border stronghold of the noble Spanheim family. Kostjanevica first appears in historical records in 1220 as the seat of a parish. It was granted town rights in 1252. The structure of the town, consisting of two parallel streets – Ulica Talcev or Veliki Plac (Great Market) and Oražnova Ulica or Mali Plac (Little Market) – has survived to the present day. Today the entire town is protected as a cultural monument of the highest category. As a result of frequent floods in the past, when the only way to get around was by boat, the town became known as the "Venice of Lower Carniola". Another association with Venice is Kostanjevica's range of cultural monuments, events and art collections. Two wooden bridges provide road access to the island, which is 500 metres long and 200 metres wide. A third bridge over the Krka, "Bigots' Bridge", is for pedestrians only. At the extreme northern tip of the island, separate from the row of terraced houses, is the parish church of St James, built in the 13th century as part of the fortification system by the northern bridge, at the time of Kostanjevica's greatest prosperity. Another valuable religious monument – a chapel of ease dedicated to St Nicholas – stands at the southern end of the island, while the town also has several other elements of religious heritage. Kostanjevica na Krki is a living town on an island. Its rich history, architecture and beauty attract large numbers of visitors from far and wide. Most visitors to the town also take the opportunity to experience some artistic heritage: at the Božidar Jakac Gallery and the Forma Viva sculpture garden, at the Lamut Art Salon or at the Gorjup Gallery (located in the Jože Gorjup Primary School).
