The original village supposedly stood in the Mohorini hamlet. The area on
which the village stands today was once surrounded by a lake and elm tre-
es, which gave their name to the village, used to grow along its shore. The
village was eradicated during the First World War and lost its traditional
Karst architecture during the renovation process. Among its interesting fea-
tures stand out the church of St. Lawrence in Dolnja Brestovica, the church
of St. Anastasia standing on a small hill in Gornja Brestovica and a typical
pil in the village centre. There are numerous sinkholes and Karst caves in
the surroundings: the Dolenjca and Drča caves, which are connected by
the underground flow of river Timava, the Grof cave (an inclined fossil
cave with five entrances, it is 350 m long and 50 m deep), the Moritz and
Bezen caverns, situated above the Mohorini hamlet, where during the First
Word War monuments to unknown deities from the 2nd or 3rd century
were discovered. In Klariči there is a water pump arranged for the Karst
aqueduct. The local “osmica” opens in Gornja Brestovica every spring.
TURISTIČNO DRUŠTVO BREST
The association was founded in June 2006 and
has 51 members. We devote ourselves mainly to
the development of the village and to arranging
cultural, tourist and sports events. We explore our
grandparent’s lives since medieval times up to
today and present them through the Karst trail to
anyone, who is interested in this unique piece of
land. We also arrange wine tastings and promote
high- quality local wines. Moreover, we cooperate
with Slovenes living in Italy, in joint tourist events.
In October, the traditional walk along the tails of
the Isonzo Front takes place. On the trail line, there
is a renovated church of St. Anastacia, which was
built in the 15th or 16th century, with a magnificen-
tly preserved Turkish encampment. The top of the
Grofovi hribi hills offers a fascinating view of the
Gulf of Trieste. The walk concludes in the old villa-
ge school, which includes an exhibition of photo-
graphs, portraying the period when the village was
eradicated, as it was situated on the front line.
