The Grahovo Natural Science Education Trail runs in the neighbourhood of the disappearing Cerknica Lake below witch-invested Mount Slivnica and the Mount Snežnik viewpoint from the village of Grahovo by the edge of the forest. It is only a good kilometer long, but the tour takes two hours. The terrain is somewhat steep and overgrown, so proper hiking footwear is recommended. The main attractions on the trail include Stara fužina (“old ironworks”), a former blacksmith shop with a fishpond, Zajčji kevdrc, an overhanging rock used as shelter by the locals during World War II, the remains of bunkers of the Rupnik Defense Line, the lime kilns where the locals once made lime, and Perkus, a well known wagoners’ inn, which regrettably is no longer open. Along the trail, thirty tree species are marked with information plaques, including the European Larch, which loses its needles in the fall in contrast to other conifers. Here you can also learn about various species of birds . . .
