Along the Istrian Wine Road / The scent of the Mediterranean – in the land of olives, refošk wine and fish

A mystical landscape with the Mediterranean climate and vegetation as well as noble wine varieties – refošk and malvazija, excellent olive oil, cherries and vegetables and boasting a rich gastronomic heritage. 

• Accommodation with half-board or lunch/dinner on the following tourist farms: Pri Filetu in Slope near Kozina, Dujčeva domačija in Škoflje near Vremski Britof, Bordon in Dekani and Medljan in Cetore near Izola, where you can taste delicious local and Istrian dishes; by previous arrangement.

• You can taste and buy excellent wine from winemakers along the Istrian Wine Road: Bordon in Dekani, Agapito in Spodnje Škofije, Santomas in Šmarje near Koper, Vinoteka Brič in Dekani, Bonin in Manžan, Barut in Polje near Izola and Rodica near Marezige; by previous arrangement.

• Visit olive groves, where you can taste and buy extra virgin olive oil, with the designation of geographical indication, on the following farms: Bordon in Dekani, Dujc in Žusterna near Koper, Feran in Sveti Peter near Sečovlje, Agapito in Spodnje Škofije, Žiber in Parecag near Sečovlje and Pirnat-Kerin in Krkavče, Kepic in Šmarje and the organic farm Plahuta in Marezige, as well as the following oil mills: Karlonga in Potok and Hrvatin in Koper; by previous arrangement.
Piran sea salt and fleur de sel are part of the heritage of the Slovenian Istria and have the designation of geographic origin.

• Visit the landscape park of the Sečovlje saltpans and see the unique saltpans in Seča near Portorož; in the gallery-studio Boteghin you can buy traditionally produced salt and other local products, as well as arts and crafts items;

• Take an excursion to the Sečovlje saltpans on the boat Solinarka and visit the museum of salt making and the coast.

• On the tourist farm Medljan you can take horseback riding lessons and go riding in the beautiful landscape of the Slovenian Istria; by previous arrangement.

• There are numerous possibilities for walks through pine woods and old town centres and for relaxing on the seaside.

• You can also go hiking and cycling in the valley of the Dragonja river, one of Istria's most beautiful natural gems. 

• You can also explore the Slovenian Istria by bike on some of the very interesting circular bike trails: Portorož-Strunjan- Piran-Portorož and Portorož-Koper-Portorož; due to mild climate cycling is possible and pleasant all year round both on the coast and inland. 

• There are also numerous marked hiking paths through picturesque Istrian villages, in the midst of vineyards and olive groves: you can go to Slavnik (1028 m), or from Hrastovlje along the Karst edge to Črni Kal and Socerb; on the way you can take refreshment in mountain huts on Slavnik; there is also the circular trail Dragonja-Sveti Peter-Krkavče-Dragonja.

• Visit the 15th-century Benko house in Črni Kal. The house was built of limestone and marl stone blocks and shows traces of simultaneous late-Gothic and Romanesque style. It is the oldest known signed and dated folk architecture building in Slovenia.

• Visit Tona's House and the well-preserved old oil mill in the village of Sveti Peter, dating back to the 18th – 19th century.

• Visit the Church of the Holy Trinity in the picturesque village of Hrastovlje. The 15th century church boasts the famous frescoes depicting the Dance of Death and interesting walls.

• Visit the museum in Krkavče and the Vrešje House, where you can learn about the everyday life of the people of Istria in an easy and fun way.

• Visit the local ethnological collection in the Bardinca House in Lopar near Marezige, where you can see a traditional kitchen with the open fireplace, a wooden wine press and a presentation of local history; by previous arrangement.

• Visit the old town centres of Koper, Piran and Izola.

• Visit the Maritime Museum in Piran. Its numerous interesting collections will tell you the story of the close relationship of the local people with the sea.
