Welcome to the land of Cviček, which like Teran is a unique autochthonous and regionally original Slovene wine. The trail winds through the foothills of the Gorjanci mountain range and along the Sava and Krka rivers from Dolenjske toplice to Pleterje, Šentjernej, Kostanjevica na Krki, Gadova peč, Čatež, Mokrice, Krško, and Brežice. If you wish to sample some wine in the silence of a monastery, visit the Carthusian Monastery in Pleterje. Along with the indispensable Cviček, the monks also produce choice berry Chardonnay, select Kerner, Sivi Pinot, and their own sparkling wine, not to mention their famous and unique pear brandy. Also visit the open-air museum (59), which presents an old Šentjernej farm, try your hand at old farm chores and customs, and try the local dishes. Anyone thirsting for culture as well as wine should visit the galleries, monastery, and Forma Viva sculpture park in Kostanjevica na Krki, Slovenia’s smallest city.
