A 14km long trail that leads through the hop fields of the Savinja Valley and other tourist attractions.
The idea for the Hop Trail originated in the traditional annual event – the Hop Trail hike, which takes place every last Saturday in August, starting at 8.00 in front of the Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Slovenia, which is also the end of the hike. This year, the hike will take place on 30 August 2014.
You can also walk this interesting part of the Savinja Valley between Žalec and Šempeter any time of the year. In this case, we recommend that you start and finish your hike at the Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Žalec, where you can also see an interesting collection throughout several storeys and taste the house beer Kukec – Savinja Valley Beer.
The first major stop is the Novo Celje mansion, where one of the first hop fields in Slovenia was planted. The trail takes us through hop fields and past a hop-drying facility, to the Vrbje pond, a natural reserve and habitat of over 170 species of birds.
The next stop is the Roman Necropolis in Šempeter, an archaeological park with monumental tombs of wealthy Romans that are magnificently decorated with Roman mythological motives.
Just when your legs start to ache and you need some rest, you will find yourself back at the starting point.
The trail is accessible in all four seasons, but is the most interesting at the end of the summer when the hop fields create a wonderful green “curtain”.
