Themed trails offer excellent suggestions for leisure activities in Slovenia. They make it easier to decide where to go on educational trails, and natural and cultural heritage trails, or which wine region or road is worth visiting. For those who already know where they're going in Slovenia but are not sure what to do when they get there, there are many suggestions to help you. Routes and roads
There are more than a hundred
educational trails all over Slovenia providing opportunities to relax and learn about forest plants, animals and natural phenomena.
Themed walking routes have maps, brochures and other important information. Heritage trails allow you to see the wealth of Slovenia's
cultural history and
turbulent periods of history. All of Slovenia's wine-growing regions and districts have organised
wine roads.
From emeralds and amber to goldenhorns

On the
Emerald route you can choose
rafting or other water sports in the emerald river Soča, learn about key First World War battles on the
Isonzo Front or try your luck in one of the
casinos in Nova Gorica. You can enjoy
Idrija žlikrofi (dumplings) and wines from
Goriška Brda. On the
Amber route you can cycle along the underground
tunnels beneath Mount Peca and the unspoiled Logarska Dolina valley, and relax among the plants and flowers in
Mozirski Gaj and
Volčji Potok Arboretum. You can try intoxicating white wines in Maribor's underground wine cellars.
On the
Pedlar route you can visit the medieval
centre of Novo Mesto, bathe in the natural spa at Dolenjske Toplice or watch the renowned Ribnica
wooden goods being made. In hospitable Bela Krajina you can taste
Bela Krajina pogača and wine. You can also try the protected
cviček wine.

On the
Wind route you can admire the underground pillar formations in
Postojna Cave and
Škocjan Cave, ride the world-famous
Lipizzaner horses, or marvel at
Predjama Castle. If you visit the Karst, you should try
kraški pršut (air dried ham) and
teran (red wine), especially if you can do so during osmica days.
On the
Sun route you can choose from numerous
natural spas, such as Moravske Toplice, Radenci and Čatež. You can cycle around
Goričko or visit
Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian town. In Prekmurje you will be well catered for with
bograč (similar to goulash) and
Prekmurska gibanica cake.
On the
Goldenhorn route you will be drawn to
Lake Bled and its island, but before setting out to one of the numerous peaks of the
Julian Alps you can relax at
Lake Bohinj or stroll through the picturesque surroundings of Blejski Vintgar gorge. Try buckwheat žganci, or for those with a sweet tooth,
Bled kremšnita cream slices.
