The defence tower, Podpeč

Podpeč 6275 Črni Kal
Above the village on top of a cliff is the Venetian defence tower. Together with the fortified pit cave below it (called Grad), the defence tower represented an important stronghold during Hungarian invasions (1411) and even more so during the Ottoman invasions (1470-1501) and the Austro-Venetian wars in the early 16th century.

With the help of the imperial army, the inhabitants of Trieste tried to conquer the tower in 1513 but failed. The tower remained under Venetian authority until the fall of the Republic in 1797. The round four-storey tower is made of hewn white stone with sandstone inserts. It is approximately 17 m tall with a mono-pitch roof originally covered with stone slates. In 1988, the tower was almost completely reconstructed to its original state and provides a fantastic view of the Rižana Valley and the Bay of Koper.
