NOB memorial

NOB Memorial, designed by the most famous Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik, is dedicated to the national resistance struggle during World War II. Its dominant location – in the middle of the town square – is meant to give the square an identity and key significance. The memorial is composed of four cornerstones as a base for an obelisk with four bronze heads and engraved texts. A bronze torch is leaned against a ball on top of the memorial. The engraved verses were written by Karel Destovnik-Kajuh, a poet and a national resistance fighter who was killed during a battle near Mozirje at the tender age of 22: On the northern face: White, white are the blossoms of the cherries, dark, too dark are the graves of the hostages. On the southern face: There is no death without life, there is no freedom without suffering. On the western face: It is beautiful, you know, mother, it is beautiful to live, but what I have died for, I would have died for again. On the eastern face: I could not hold it out anymore, it was burning inside me, my fist was smarting, so I hit. NOB Memorial, whose bronze portraits and torch were made by the sculptor Vladimir Stovicek, was unveiled on the 9th November 1952 and was transferred to the present location in 1995 following the changes that Radece endured after the erection of a hydroelectric power plant in Vrhovo.
