The monument to mountain guides in
Trenta is built into a rock by the road below the
Juliana botanical garden.
In 1957 it was dedicated by the Slovenian Mountaineering Association to famous
Trenta mountain guides who belong among the pioneers of Slovenian mountaineering and alpine climbing.
In the second part of the last century, especially in the period of discovery of the
Julian Alps, hunters and shepherds from
Trenta became famous mountain guides.
Kugy, who was a pioneer in discovering
Trenta and its mountains, really appreciated the guides' natural ability to move across the difficult alpine world, their endurance, perseverance, courage and good nature.
There are many summits and walls closely connected with the names of famous people from
Trenta.
Kugy managed to conquer
Škrlatica (1880), and Ivan Berginc climbed the north wall of
Triglav in its eastern part as early as 1890.
The works of Jože Komac, Anton Kravanja the father and his son, Tožbar, as well as of other humble guides and builders of daring alpine paths are also just as famous.
