The monument is the work of academic sculptor Stojan Batič and was erected in 1978 on the 200th anniversary of the first ascent to Mount Triglav, Slovenia?s highest mountain (2,864 m). It stands in front of the Hotel Jezero in Ribčev Laz, from where Mount Triglav can be seen.

The monument is a memorial to the first ascent on August 25, 1778, made by a group of local men: the doctor Lovro Willomitzer from Stara Fužina, the hunter Štefan Rošič from Savica, and the miners Matevž Kos from Jereka and Luka Korošec from Koprivnik.
