Kamnik, Mali grad Castle and Two-storey Chapel

The Mali grad chapel is one of the most important Kamnik's cultural and historical attractions and represents also a unique example of this type of arhitecture in Slovenia. Situated on the hill in the middle of the town and often reffed to as the balcony of Kamnik by its citizens, the chapel used to form a part of the castle complex built in the 11th century. The castle was back then the seat of the Counts of Andechs from Bavaria (Germany). What remained of the complex is this unique two-story Romanesque chapel with the crypt which is corved into the rock. Despite later Goethic and Baroque alterationes, the chapel has kept its Romansesque core.

The lover chapel is dedicated to St. Eligius, the patron saint of blacksmiths, while the upper chapel was originally dedicated to St. Bartholenew, and later to the Mother of God.

Climb up to the Mali grad hill and enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the town and of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

Read the legend of stingly countess Veronika, who is depicted in the municipal coat of arms and who, according to legend, lived in the castle.

Special feature: This interesting two-storey chapel with a crypt has no equal in Slovenia’s archeological heritage.
