The Mura river is somewhat off the beaten track. Its upper reaches in north-eastern Slovenia are the border with Austria, while its lower parts are the border with Croatia. Its fast-flowing 91-kilometre run through Slovenia is perhaps a little discordant from the lazy peace of the edge of the Pannonian plain. Its characteristics include oxbow lakes, where a particular range of aquatic fauna has been preserved, such as mudminnow. In the oxbow lakes and the arms of the river coarse fishermen are on the trail of tench, Crucian carp, carp, bream, as well as perch, pike and wels. The main current of the Mura is home to barbel, nase, chub, vimba, chrup and various other kinds of coarse fish.
