Tip for a hiking tour 1: Zatolmin - Javorca - source of Tolminka river - Zatolmin
We start our way in Tolmin. In the nearby Zatolmin we turn onto the road into the Tolminka Valley. Walking along the road may not be the most pleasant but we can enjoy the shade of the woods and the rustling of the river below us. After a little less than two hours, the valley opens up and a steep side road leads us to the church on Javorca, set in memory of the victims of World War I. We come back to the bottom of a wide valley shaped by a glacier and walk among the remains of bunkers on the Polog mountain pasture, where the cattle are still pastured. Behind the mountain pasture the road gradually becomes worse and the slope ascends. A narrow mule track leads us to the end of the valley where our ascent is concluded on the mountain pasture Pod Osojnico and the nearby source of the Tolminka. We return along the same way and by it we can see the interesting troughs near Tolmin.
Tip for a hiking tour 2: Alpine pasture Polog - Prode pasture - across the Tolminka river - Osojnica pasture -
In a hidden and secluded valley of the Tolminka River lies the Alpine pasture of Polog, where cattle graze amidst the fairy-tale mountains and the excellent Tolmin cheese is made. The pastureland lies in the southern part of Triglav National Park, and is a starting point for numerous mountain hiking excursions or simply for a pleasant walk to the enchanting springs of the Tolminka, which rise a few kilometres higher up.
From the Polog Alpine pasture head off along the gravel road to the first junction, where you turn right towards the Prode pasture. By means of the famous “kurukula” make your way across the Tolminka river and cross the Prode pasture. Above the river continue to the Planina pod Osojnico pasture. On the other side, look for the easy mule trail, which takes you back to the starting point (2hr).
