Brolo square 4, 6000 Koper 6000 Koper
The Fontico was an institution that every venetian city needed. It was a crop warehouse, that had an important role in the food supply of the town population, but it was important also for the commerce. In some places the Fonticos had become also the places where merchans occasionally spent the nights. There were many fonticos in Venice, for example the Fondaco dei tedeschi, Fondaco dei turchi and so on. The word comes from the greek pandokos, that indicates a place to sleep during the night.

The Fontico of Koper is already mentioned in 1392, it got it's final shape in 1460, with the appearance of the front changing somewhat later on. Fontico is one of the oldest buildings in Brolo Square and it characterized the Brolo square as the main supply center for the wider population. From the very beginning, the building was used as a warehouse for the grain given to the townsmen in times of bad harvest or war. The front is characterized by gothic windows in the upper flor with a gothic main portal, while in the ground floor we can admire the richly decorated renaissance windows. Besides those an atractive feature are also the heraldiic decorations, that mostly refers to the podestates of Koper who contributed the most to the operation of this importat supply and social institution. Among the most important, the emblem of the podestate Bernardo Diedo, which contains the oldest known example of the sun symbol, that later evolved in the coat of arms of the township.
