Leave the Ljubljana-Koper expressway at the Logatec exit and take the local road to
Laze on the Planinsko polje. Here, the
Unica River meanders and disappears into the
pod Stenami sinkholes near Laze. The route continues to
Cerknica with its
Church of Marijino rojstvo (“Birth of Mary”). Burned down by the Turks, it was rebuilt and surrounded by a defensive wall that is still partially preserved. Behind Cerknica spreads Slovenia’s largest karst polje and the disappearing
Cerknica Lake (37). A presentation of the working of the numerous sinkholes of this karst phenomenon is displayed in the Jezerski hram museum, and the best view of the lake is undoubtedly from the peak of Mount Slivnica (1,114 m). The route continues toward the Bloke plateau, turning right in Bloška polica toward Lož and continuing to the
Križna jama cave. A boat tour on the magic blue-green water of the underground river takes visitors to see the stalactites. A few kilometers more brings you to
Snežnik Castle, which last served as a hunting lodge for its aristocratic owners and still boasts their interesting collection of furniture and trophies.
