European Destinations of ExcelleNce (EDEN) is a flagship initiative from the European Commission. The European EDEN network includes five Slovenian destinations. These are destinations that will never directly compete with larger and more established tourist destinations in Slovenia, mostly represented by spas, the coastline, the capital of Ljubljana or the Alpine tourist centres, such as Bled and Kranjska Gora. They offer an unique experience in touch with nature. Do you feel close to such an experience?
Slovenia is primarily characterized by preserved nature and especially by its diversity as the crossroads of various landscapes – the European Alps, Mediterranean and Pannonian Plain. Slovenia has managed to preserve, in a small space, the balanced palette of natural and cultural values.
Did you know that Slovenia has a special shade of green? That it is the third most wooded country in Europe? That more than one third of its territory is protected within the framework of Natura 2000? The concept of destinations, encouraged by the European Commission through the EDEN project, is perfect for Slovenia.
Today, Slovenia prides itself on five EDEN destinations. The Soča Valley, the Solčavsko Region, the Kolpa River, Idrija and Laško represent the core of good green practice and green offer at the level of destinations in Slovenia. Destinations are part of the European EDEN network.
EDEN destinations develop a more individual concept of tourism and primarily offer accommodation in smaller facilities (tourist farms, B&Bs, inns, smaller hotels and camps), their cuisine is based on local features, their tourist offer is increasingly represented by interesting stories, while their experience is based on tradition and contact with people who live there.
