Postojna cave, which is considered the most famous tourist cave in the world, Slovenia`s biggest tourist attraction and one of the biggest Karst monuments of the world, hosted its 35 millionth visitor in mid-July. The visit of Archduke Ferdinand in 1819 marked the beginning of organized tourism in Postojna Cave – therefore, there has been almost two centuries of organized visits, although it is possible to find the Passage of Old Signatures which dates back to the 13th century.
The 35-millionth visitor was Paweł Piatkiewicz from Poland, who visited the cave with his family. He was delighted to receive a weekend package for two people in a luxury suite at Hotel Aleksander in Rogaška Slatina. In addition to the main prize, the winning visitor received a hand-wrought sculpture of a human fish – one of Postojna Cave`s most famous features – from the CEO of Postojna Cave, Marjana Batagelj, and a numismatic kit with two coins bearing the Postojna Cave motif. Sofie Steffens who was visitor number 34,999,999 from Germany, and guest number 35,000,001, Wang Jian Qui from China both won a prize for just missing out.
And why is Postojna Cave so special? It is the only cave in the world with a dual railway - only in the Postojna Caves has there been, for as long as 140 years, a special train to ride through the magnificent underground vaults with stalactites adorned like chandeliers, through a landscape dotted with playful sculptures of limestone. A total 21 kilometres of tunnels, galleries and magnificent halls offer a unique experience of this underground world. Postojna Cave is also one of the world`s most diverse cave systems.
A visit to the cave takes about an hour and a half. The total length of the tourist part of the cave is 5 km, with 3.2 km by electric train and 1.8 km on foot. Postojna Cave also offers many other programs, adventure tours, a visit to the vivarium, and the chivalrous history and legend of Erasmus Predjamski invites you to experience the nearby Predjama Castle where it is possible to test your stamina and mining skills.
