The Castle Grounds of Otočec are situated on an island in the middle of the river Krka at the Otočec Castle. The park was most probably designed in the 19th century and its style is close to that of landscape gardening. Besides autochthonous tree species, there are also quite some exoticl ones (e.g. the tulip tree, trumpet honeysuckle, the plane tree, etc.). The trees interweave with each other around two central clearings in the upper and the lower part of the island. The most tipical element of the park is its closeness to water – the surface of the park with its colourful vegetation at the riverbanks is reflected in the river. This contrasting relationship is being additionally stressed by the volume of the trees and the architecture of the castle over the rather straight line of the water and the grassy surfaces. The Castle Grounds of Otočec are the largest park in the entire community of Novo mesto. It has a special aesthetic value for the landscape around it, it proves of the local kulture and at the same time presents a venue for spending one’s spare time. The park is also an important part of the planned Landscape Park of Otočec.
