The southwestern slopes of Pohorje sweep down to the Drava River as a steep rocky hillside, known as Bukovje. The geological base here is made up of old stone, namely amphibolite, eclogite, and chlorite-amphibolite slate, which continues in the same composition north from the Drava River to the base of Košenjak. On the shady and moist slopes the pre-alpine forest of beech and dead nettle is the only area of vegetation in this section of Pohorje. Owing to its exceptional natural characteristics the Bukovje forest is classified as a forest reserve covering an area of 134 hectares. The beech tree (Fangus sylvatica) dominates the forest, and gave the forest its name.
