His name is closely linked to the frescoes of Hrastovlje. The academic painter and sculptor wrote: “My art is Mediterranean, and is as such far from continental, but it would like to be just as is the art of Hrastovlje.” In 1949, the best known painter of Slovenian Istria, a native of Hrastovlje, following his studies in Florence, discovered the frescoes in the village church. In 1951, following his graduation in Ljubljana, his painting and sculpting art talents blossomed into unthought-of heights. On the way to Dol, above the village, stands the stone statue of a Šavrinka. “Šavrinke” were the well-known female travellers who carried farm produce on their heads to Trieste, where they sold or exchanged it for things they needed at home. The abovementioned artist gave the statue to Hrastovlje in 1990.
