The origins of the museum date back to the year 1898 and consequently it is one of the oldest museums in Slovenia. It is our first specialised museum designed as a Pan-Slovenian museum, disregarding the borders of the administrative units of those times. It was founded by the Slovenian Teachers' Association with the purpose of presenting their contributions to school and national development, but it operated only until 1910. Since 1938 the museum has been operating as an independent institution connected with the Slovenian school administration. The Slovenian School Museum belongs to a group of ten Slovenian national museums which are, as state museums, financed by the Ministry of Education and Sport. The museum is one of a number of very different pedagogical/school museums, which number nearly 700 in the world, mainly in Europe. They range from private museums, managed by associations or schools, to city and state museum institutions. The Slovenian School Museum, with exhibitions, pedagogical activities (e.g. historical lessons in the old room called "my grandmother's classroom"), catalogues and the magazine "School Chronicle" present the Slovenian school system from pre-school education to university of the third age. The museum performs its cultural mission also by encouraging research activities of young people, counselling and mentoring.
