Regional museum Kočevje is settled in Šeškov dom, once called Sokoljev dom, not far away from the center of Kočevje. In the same building took place first parliament of voted partizan deputies of Slovenian nation in 1943.
Evidences about collecting the museum literature go back in 1952.
In 1960 was established General local museum, which renamed one year later into Regional museum Kočevje. Museum removed to the new location completely in 1963.
In the last 15 years museum try to present to the public ex cultural image of inhabitants in Kočevska region. In this way they want to introduce to the people the region history, which was not long ago in out cultural awareness presented in very small amount or even concealed.
That is why museum made several notable exhibitions. Some of them were presented in many small towns in Slovenia and also in foreign countries.
Since ninetieths of the last century Regional museum Kočevje has accepted new orientations and changes of work and plans. More and more visitors have been attracting employees to start with new work forms, which tend to more active and connected co-operation with visitors of all generations. Special attention is made on the youngest visitors.
In year 1993 started special teaching program for children before or in first levels of elementary school. With this actions in museum want to educate future regular visitors of museum events and also spread interest and knowledge about cultural heritage. Many of them become even museum partners, collectors of heritage things.
One year later they introduced as first in Slovenia museum subscription, which is intended for visitors who can visit the museum exhibitions and events in a little different and cheaper way.
