The Museum of Slovenian Religious History operates in the premises of the old prelature at the Stična Cistercian Monastery. The idea for the establishment of the museum is quite old, but it was put into practice only after the year 1980, when the grammar school and secondary school moved out of some parts of the monastery. In its first decade the museum operated on a voluntary basis. The exhibition areas were arranged with the support of the monastery and under the supervision of the national cultural protection board and with the help of numerous donators from Slovenia and abroad. In 1991 in Stična the Association of Friends of the Museum of Slovenian Religious History was founded, which employed the first curator with the help of the Ministry of Culture. Through the years the museum obtained other employees who do their work on a professional basis. Some years ago we decided at the museum to change the house 'Hlapčevska hiša' near the monastery, which was first renovated and intended for the exhibition of larger items, into a modern restoration workshop. The museum protects, researches, preserves, restores and documents the sacral heritage of the whole of Slovenia and at the same time educates and informs people about the history and tradition of faith in the area of Slovenia. There are permanent and periodical exhibitions at the museum and its publications can be viewed as well.
