The Ljubljana Festival, with its long history and tradition of presenting premier artistic events, contributes significantly to the cultural life of Ljubljana in the summer.
The festival’s rich programme of concert, opera, and ballet events features internationally renowned artists, including some of the world's most recognised names in music and performing arts.
The main venue of the Ljubljana Festival is the picturesque Križanke Summer Theatre, a gem of 13th century architecture rebuilt to its present form by the famous architect Jože Plečnik. Festival events are also held at a number of other prestigious venues in Ljubljana and its surrounding areas.
For several years now, the opening of the Ljubljana Festival has been held in Kongresni trg, one of Ljubljana's central squares. The opening of the 62nd edition of the festival will feature the scenic cantata Carmina Burana performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana, and several different choirs under the baton of Uroš Lajovic.
The names to appear at the Ljubljana Festival by the beginning of September include Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons, the Filarmonica '900 orchestra of the Teatro Regio in Turin under the conduction of Andres Mustonen with Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina as a special guest, the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, the mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, the pianist Boris Berezovsky, the conductor George Pehlivanian, Stars of Russian Ballet, the flamenco star María Pagés, Vlatko Stefanovski, Vasil Atanasovski, Stefan Milenković, Marko Hatlak, the Mikhail I. Glinka Choir, and many others.
