Small can be big! Slovenia, which may be a small country but is big in terms of basketball, will host EuroBasket 2013, the European men's basketball championship organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The semi-final and final matches will be played in Ljubljana.

The championship will bring together 24 European teams, including the national team of Slovenia, where basketball is the most popular team sport. The best known Slovenian players to appear at the championship, including Goran Dragić, Erazem Lorbek, Mirza Begić and Matjaž Smodiš, are all members of renowned European or American NBA teams.

EuroBasket 2013, the so far largest sporting event to take place in the independent Slovenia, will be the first large international basketball championship to be held in the country since the world championship of 1970, when Slovenia was still part of Yugoslavia. It was then that Ljubljana hosted the match in which the legendary Slovenian player Ivo Daneu as captain of the team helped Yugoslavia win the world championship title for the first time in history.

EuroBasket championship groups

Group A: Ukraine, UK, France, Germany, Israel, Belgium. Matches will be played at the Dvorana Tivoli sports hall in Ljubljana.

Group B: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Latvia. Matches will be played at the Dvorana Podmežakla sports hall in Jesenice (60km from Ljubljana).

Group C: Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia. Matches will be played at the Dvorana Zlatorog sports hall in Celje (75km from Ljubljana).

Group D: Finland, Greece, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Turkey. Matches will be played at the Dvorana Bonifika sports hall in Koper (107km from Ljubljana).
