The Topla valley

Print Add to travel planner
Topla is a marvellous Alpine valley under the south face of Peca. Because of its exceptional natural beauty, it is a protected area. The whole hamlet embraces the solid isolated high mountain farms of Burjak, Florin, Kordež, Fajmut in Končnik, which are surrounded on all sides by extensive dense spruce and larch forests. The exceptionally large, solid farmsteads in Topla are more like small hamlets. Every farmstead created its own vernacular architecture of house and barn. The typical traditional form of building here is wood and stone, with a straight, unhipped shingle covered roof. Each farmstead is a distinctive example of Alpine farm architecture, with vestiges of the 16th and 19th century tradition of the Carinthian main room. The principal animals of this beautiful valley are mountain hare and Alpine grouse, blackcock, capercaillie and wood grouse. Various birds of prey also nest in the dense forests, and in the clear waters of the Topla stream, live brook trout, freshwater crabs and snails, witch are protected animal species because of the importance of their ecological function.
