Kocelj was prince of the margraviate Lower Pannonia, which he inherited from his father Pribin. In the year 869 he attained independence from under Franconian rule and he governed until 874; he also helped the holy brothers Ciril and Metod.
The stylized Prince Koclja monument can be seen opposite the building of Narodni dom.
