Velenje was first mentioned as a market in 1264 and is today one of the oldest medieval market place in Slovenia. Due to lack of development over the years the original structure of the market is well-preserved and is pretty much the same today it always was. The layout of the market is determined by the junction of two roads (Celje - Šoštanj and Polzela - Velenje). The market ends with the Vila Bianca on one side, and on the other with a large building which used to be a hotel. After the Second World War some of the newer buildings substantially changed the image of the market (the new bakery, for example), but there are still many other old buildings which play an important role in the appearance of the market. It is, however, the overall image of the market, which play an important role in the appearance of the market. It is however, the overall image of the market, with a touch of the medieval, that impresses the visitor.
