The parish church of sv. Andrej (st. Andrew), the apostle in Kočevske Poljane

Kočevske Poljane, 8350 Dolenjske Toplice, 8350 Dolenjske Toplice
The church that stands at the edge of the village, drawn into the hill above the Parish, was built in the year1625, during the Baroque period. Its interior boasts many decorative paintings and valuable artefacts and fittings. The most important is certainly the altar, which was built inthe year 1757 by an unknown author. Its beautiful late-Baroque scenery surrounds the central niche that contains a statue of Sv. Andrej, the patron saint of the Parish. In the loft above the altar there is an oval-shaped painting of the archangel Michael and, although it has been repainted, the original is reputedly by Valentin Metzinger. The statues of Sv. Ana and Sv. Joahim, whichwere previously positioned independently on the consoles beside the altar, are currently in the altar. Among the many interesting fittings of the church are the stations-of-the-cross paintings, which were produced on thin plate using a technique perfected by Führich. With their German Gothic inscriptions they are certainly an eloquent reminder of the peopleof that time. Other noteworthy fittings include the organs and their beautiful Baroque cabinet. The organs were made in the year 1861 by the master Franc Dev and, although out of order, are among the few remaining examples of his work and therefore very valuable. The coloured windows with their oval portraits of the saints and German inscriptions are also interesting.
