Muta: Rotunda of St. John the Baptist at Spodnja Muta

St. John's, a small church at the outflow of the river Bistrica into the Drava, catches the attention of the passerby with its round centre, quaint shingle roof and jutting tower. We are led into its interior through the original half-circled, slightly horseshoe shaped Romantic portal. Here, constructed on the original foundations, is a low semi-circular wall which indicates the apse, which was replaced in the first half of the 14th century by a closed three-sided early Gothic presbytery. The brick built dining room stands in the apse in place of the original one, left of the entrance there is a preserved piece of the original floor base.  The centre of the church is lit by the light form the original semi-circle Romantic window, while in the presbytery there are three Gothic windows. They are adorned with pictures in the early Gothic style from the first half of the 14th century. In each of the blocks of the wooden ceiling in the centre of the church, there is a picture of a passion flower. The ceiling dates back to the first half of the 18th century, while the wooden ceiling in the presbytery is from the second half of the 16th century. The altar with statues of John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, Laurence and Stephen, is a lovely carved work from the end of the 17th century. On the outside of the presbytery there is a preserved Baroque mural of both John the Baptist and John the Evangelist and under it a simple arrow for money. The relief of an eagle on the exterior, to the right of the entrance, is a Roman legacy, which shows also that St. John's stands on cultural ground with more than a thousand years history.
