Dravograd: The church of The Holy Spirit at Ojstrica

The small church of The Holy Spirit at Ojstrica completes the image of the Košenjak–Velka Park which, with the highest point in the municipality (Košenjak, 1522 m), represents a picturesque and naturalistically interesting region.  Ojstrica, a collection of secluded farms, is a treasure of ethnological sites. The church was first mentioned in 1619 as The Holy Spirit at Cimperg. Within the building's structure is the largest ceiling area covered with paintings in Slovenia. It is worth special attention as it is also signed and dated: the names Krištof Jamnik, Jurij Skurlej, Rupert Slang, Tomaž Ditmar and the years 1626 and 1627 are noted. The ornamental quality of this ceiling painting is characteristic of the period, and in the development of this style of painting, makes use of the last form of stencilled patterns.  The importance of this decorated ceiling is even more so, as it is a single, in its own way, unique monument, indicating that the culture of such decorative work, had moved from the market town to the countryside.
